Modern Warfare 4: The Launch Guide

Modern Warfare 4 launched at midnight local time on 23 October 2026. If you have just installed it and want to know what you are actually grinding towards, this is the short version, with links to the longer pieces on each part.

Where you can play it

Modern Warfare 4 is on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. It did not release on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, and it is not on Game Pass at launch. The Switch 2 release is Call of Duty's return to Nintendo hardware after more than a decade.

Campaign early access opened on 16 October for pre-orders, and DMZ early access on 20 October. Multiplayer, the full campaign and DMZ all went live together on the 23rd.

What launched with it

Activision's launch patch notes put the numbers at 33 weapons, 33 Operators and a player progression path running to Level 55. On the map side there are 12 core 6v6 maps, three 32v32 Ground War maps, four 2v2 Gunfight maps, and Kill Block, which Activision says can produce more than 500 configurations.

Modes run in Standard, Alternate and Hardcore variants, which is why mode counts differ depending on whether a guide counts playlists or named modes.

The progression you are signing up for

Military ranks go from Private I at Level 1 to Commander at Level 55. Hitting 55 is where the long game starts:

• Classic Prestige resets your unlocks and hands you a 20 percent XP boost and a Permanent Unlock Token.
• Regular Prestige keeps every unlock you have.
• You choose again at each new Prestige, ten times over.
• Prestige Master then runs to Level 1,000, with rewards at milestones along the way.

Weapons level separately

Weapon level is its own track, and max level is set per weapon, so no two guns are the same amount of work. Once a gun maxes out, optional Weapon Prestige resets that one gun and relocks its attachments in exchange for the Pyroclast camos. Player Prestige and Weapon Prestige do not affect each other.

Nine mastery camos

There are nine mastery camos, three per mode:

• Multiplayer: Mercurial Drift, then Polyatomic Reforged, then Orion Reforged.
• Warzone: Damascus Reforged, Empyros, Parallax.
• DMZ: Chiral, Helio, Ripple Tide.

Warzone comes later

Warzone does not switch over at launch. Season 1 is reported for 6 November 2026, and that is when Warzone takes on Modern Warfare 4 weapons, Operators and movement. Until then it stays on its Black Ops 7 integration. More on the Warzone switch.
